Pilanesberg
National Park
Seen on a day tour to Pilanesberg
National Park
This was on a not so recent trip - 19 Sept 2007. It is and was
a typical day, in the sense that I saw things I've never seen before
in 265 days in the Park. We did see extremely rare sightings, sightings that
guides will give their left arms for. But they don't
just happen; you have to look for it! I lifted only 15 pics out of 300 taken,
but will put a gallery up with most of them later.
2 Male lions, one posing below just before they headed for the bush. It is getting hotter, so sightings will be less.
The elusive black rhino watering the Park; another 1st for black, seen white doing it. A brilliant sighting.
Kudu female right next to us, about 2 m. You can only get that close if you approach right.
White rhino & calf. They are all over the Park, and if you don't see them you must be blind.
Giraffe foreplay, a 1st for me in 265 full days. I have seen them trying to mate once before, but unsuccessfully.
I have also seen males fight several times before, but this was incredibly special.....So we finally moved to find the elephants I saw from 500 m away, but found the sable instead.
A rare sighting, and I was actually actively looking for them and buffalo (no luck there!)
Did find the elephants, but about 100m away 1 km further, having a drink and then a dustbath.
Then, another 1st for me, and about 20 m away. I must add that we waited about 40 minutes for this;
and that a few cars passed without having a clue what was happening. Unfortunately 5 min after this they
moved onto the road and some stupid woman pushed them right off & they started feeding. I'd like to add
that this was a middle of the day sighting. Do not for one second think it is not worth being out there! So after lunch. We spend about half an hour just watching this male. I just love the pic below!
This is the 1st time since winter that the water is warm enough to swim, wasn't last week.
It also means the hippos and crocodiles won't be easy to see till autumn again.
Giant Eagle Owl, extremely rare to see in the day and blended in extremely well.
Wasn't my spot but someone in front of me, was probably someone ahead of them.
And then even rarer, an unconcerned serval on the road for about 15 seconds, another 1st!
Unfortunately all 7 of my pics was a bit blurry.....this happens when I get extremely excited.
Then we headed out, but with bad light. So I have real bad pics of 2 male ostriches next to us.
Incredibly we saw brown hyena 3 times on the way out, and I have an even worse pic of 1....It's like this. You never know what you are going to see. This was another great day for me. I actually packed my lens but forgot my camera; realising that on the way to pick up the client the night before. So I turned around, was15 min late, but man, am I glad! I get these National Geographic moments on a pretty regular basis, but this is something no one can ever guarrantee. On a 1 day I will try show you as much as I can, but it is normally too short. Half a day is really far too short. I normally do not have time to sit and wait, but I do! 80% of the time it doesn't pay off, but boy, the 20% is worth the wait! When you go with me and it is there, I will normally find it. Realise that sometimes it just isn't! But I will make the most of it!
