Binoculars needed for Pilanesberg National Park
If you don't take a pair of Binoculars to any Game Park you might consider rather staying at home & watching Animal Planet instead!
We use 8 x 40's, 10 x 50's and 15 x 70's along and this seriously enhances our Game viewing pleasure. If you don't have binoculars you should understand 2 things before you buy one.
You can get some info on sites like http://www.birdwatching.com/optics/binoculars1.html but it can get a bit technical.
The understandable way to put it is that there are 2 variants you look at, power & light. So in a "8x25" power is a 8x enlargement, while 25 will be the diameter of the lens the light can enter through. So in general the "bigger" you can go the better, but this is limited to other factors. So the 2nd thing you should look at is the "twilight factor". With the above binoculars divide the 8 into the 25 - giving 3.33. The optimum for normal eyes is 4.5 so the above bino's have limited use - they won't let in enough light during dusk and dawn. On the other hand an "8x40" or "10x50" would let in more light that is usable by the normal eye, so you would pay for something you can't use - like us!! But it does make a huge difference & I take along 2pp + 1 extra.
