Game reserves:Marakele National Park - includes Marakele Ltd (private, no fence between)- About 90 000 ha, no lion. Stunning views, 600 breeding pairs of Lapped faced Vultures. Most game especially the elephants are found in the sweetveld of Marakele Ltd. The proposed dropping of fences between Marakele and Welgevonden has been put on hold due to the correct belief that Welgevondens' game will also move away to the sweetveld.
Madikwe National Park, close to the Botswana border, 90 km north of Zeerust - 60 000 ha
Welgevonden Reserve - borders Marakele - 26 000ha
Molopo Game Reserve near Vorstershoop, close to Botswana - 24 000 ha
Borakalalo National Park, also in NW Province 16 km's north of Brits - 13 500 ha. Excellent bird viewing with over 300 bird species recorded.
Mabula Game Reserve, near Warmbaths, nice scenery but lions and sable in seperate enclosures. Have to go on a guided drive, not allowed to drive yourself - 10 000 ha
Botsalano Game Reserve, 38 km north east of Mafikeng - 5 800 ha
Nature reserves:
Barberspan Nature reserve near Delareyville, 15 km north-east, 2 000ha, known for abundant birdlife, 320 species.
Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve, near Bloemhof, 7 800 ha, no idea what goes on there but 256 bird species recorded.
Boskop Dam and Nature Reserve, 17 km north of Potchefstroom, 3 000 ha
Mafikeng Game Reserve, borders Mafikeng on east, mix of Kalahari and Acacia bushveld, 4 800 ha
Kgaswane Mountain Reserve, just south-west of Rustenburg, 2 walking trails, 4 257 ha
SA Lombaard Nature Reserve, west of Bloemhof dam, a breeding reserve, 3 660 ha
Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve, north east of Rustenburg near Beestekraal, good bird watching - 340 sp+, 2 500ha
Wolwespruit Dam Nature Reserve, close to Leeudoringstad, a birding, angling and hiking destination,2 800 ha
