Prices are charged in Rack rates to the public
on which operators normally get a commission of between 10 and 15%. We
charge rack rates as well. Some operators get STO rates and then mark up
what they can get away with. For example; consumers on packaged tours to
South Africa are paying 12,1% over and above the rack rates due to margins
imposed along the value chain by operators and travel agents. This was
yet another far-reaching and interesting finding uncovered by Monitor,
the company hired to conduct tourism research in core tourism markets around
the world for SA Tourism (SAT).
Flights
This is normally the most expensive. A
travel agent from Oz told me very recently that although the flights from
Oz are about double than to Europe, the cost of everything is half. And
she just loved SA. In general flights out of SA are cheaper than flights
into SA. Singles are normally more expensive than returns.
